A Taster of Bannow History
A tantalising taste and a gentle reminder of some of the interesting and historical facts about Bannow - The Buried City, The Danes mining in Barrystown, the arrival of the Normans, Cromwell’s clearance of land owners - all would leave their mark on the locality as we know it to-day. Closer to our own era we had the brave Bannow men, led by Captain Andy Colfer, from The Mill, Kiltra, who fought for our freedom in 1798, the visit of ‘The Minstrel Boy’ - Thomas Moore, followed by ‘The Liberator’ himself - Daniel O’Connell to Bannow. I’m not forgetting the Boyse Family, Grange or The Carr Family, Graigue House where the writer, Mrs. S. C. Hall spent her formative years and she has left us a rich legacy of how our ancestors lived, worked and loved in Bannow. Were any of your ancestors forced to go to the dreaded Workshouse during the ‘hungry’ years or were any of the men or women in your family members of the local Land League? There is so much more to the history of our Parish - hedge-schools, fairs, ship-wrecks, music, song, language, religion, field-names, our local traditions and sport - to name but a few interesting facts.
